• We will deliver on our commitment to the UN Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities. The convention identifies that physical and communicative barriers often prevent people from being able to be fully involved in society. We will take action within the Council to make sure disabled people have their rights protected.
  • We will continue to push forward with improving accessibility by identifying funding to increase the number of ‘changing places toilets’ across our Borough and ensuring that council services are fully accessible for people with disabilities, including offering formats such as hard copy, easy read, Braille and large print for example.
  • We will continue to develop innovative supported living schemes so that people can remain living in the borough. We will work towards an improved offer so that, where possible, people can live near to their families and communities.
  • We will deliver a specific programme of work with the community sector to improve the range of opportunities for work for disabled people. The council is a Disability Confident Leader and will support businesses to develop policies so that they can recruit and retain a diverse workforce including people with disabilities and long-term conditions.
  • We will continue to identify opportunities for people with disabilities who live in our borough to influence policy and the design of our services, including ideas to address barriers to employment. We will promote uptake of financial support, including benefits, tax credits, payments, grants, access to work schemes and concessions.  We will also work with people with disabilities to understand how we can better utilise assistive technology to enable people to maximise their independence.
